News Story Structure

 

The Inverted Pyramid

The inverted pyramid is the basic form of news writing which places the information in the

story in the order of decreasing importance. Some basic rules of news writing:

• The lead, or first paragraph, of the story should be short, about 25 words.

• Subsequent paragraphs should also be short, between 25 and 35 words.

• The story should answer the questions associated with the 5 Ws and H (Who,

What, Where, When, Why and How) in a logical order.

• News should be in active, rather than passive, voice.

• Writing should be tight without redundancies and empty words.

• News stories should be written in third person (he, she) rather than first

person (I) or second person (you).

• News stories should never reflect the opinion of the writer.

• A good news story has several credible sources.

• Quotations should be used throughout the story to lend authenticity to the

reporter’s facts.

• All quotes must be attributed to a source, whoever said the quote.

• A good way to end the story is on a quote.

 

1. News Briefs

News briefs are very concise stories, generally between two and four paragraphs, which give

very basic information about an event or situation which merits coverage, but does not

require a full-blown story.

 

2. News Writing

News writing style is the prose style used for news reporting in media such as newspapers,

radio and television. News writing attempts to answer all the basic questions about any

particular event who, what, when, where and why (the Five Ws) and also often how at the

opening of the article. This form of structure is sometimes called the "inverted pyramid", to

refer to the decreasing importance of information in subsequent paragraphs. News stories

also contain at least one of the following important characteristics relative to the intended

audience: proximity, prominence, timeliness, human interest, oddity, or consequence. The

related term journalese is sometimes used, usually pejoratively, to refer to news-style writing.

Another is headlinese.

Reflection

For the most important of journalism is the news story structure, this can help students understand how the story structure is reversed.  Now, I realize that news story structure is very important in news writing and makes me as a student more confident to use and learn English feature materials for news in class or public.  So, to know what I want to do when I increase my knowledge about English and in the future when I become a teacher or journalist I know how to give the student effective learning and know about news story structure.  for me the learning activities that make me know all about english is to know what i will learn like i summarize, memorize the course and distribution of english and check the grammar to know if my english is already good.  hopefully this material can add knowledge and insight related to learning innovation so that I can get a better sense of the purpose of the material.
