Summary

The average citizen is bombarded with hundreds of messages from television, radio, newspapers, the Internet, text messages, the automated voice, and mail--and we always feel like we're overwhelmed in information. However, since many of the messages are meaningless to us, we ignore them. This unit deals with factual messages that are valuable to readers because they are newsworthy. Learn to sort through some factual messages and choose those that are meaningful to our readers using: "news elements" and knowledge of our readers. This is referred to as "news judgment." A news is made up of both facts and opinions. Facts contain circumstances or events that did occur.  While opinion contains someone's opinion or thoughts about an incident. Facts can be seen or obtained from other sources.  While opinions only come from one's opinions, thoughts, and stances.
